Laser Therapy

Step-by-Step Guide to Laser Vein Ablation

1. Preparation
The doctor will request that you lie comfortably on the treatment table and he will use a pen to mark the veins requiring treatment aided by the help of an ultrasound scanner. This precise marking guides the laser treatment to target the affected veins effectively.

2. Anesthetic
The doctor will inject a local anesthetic in the area if they perform endovenous laser therapy, ensuring that you feel no pain during the procedure.

3. Procedure
The doctor will guide a laser fiber through the catheter. Each vein’s laser fiber treatment takes around 5 minutes, and the entire session lasts about 30 minutes.

Here's What To Expect After The Procedure

After the procedure, you can resume walking and everyday activities, but avoid diving or strenuous activities as your doctor advises. It’s normal to experience some pain and tightening sensation for a few days after your procedure. The doctor will instruct you to wear compression stockings and avoid exposing the treated area to water to prevent swelling and promote healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

For over 20 years, doctors have been using laser ablation to treat spider and varicose veins, and it has been successful over 95% of the time.

You may require multiple sessions to see the treatment’s effects. Discuss the number of sessions and their frequency with your doctor. Inform them if you’ve had laser therapy in the past.

The disappearance of the veins can take 3 to 9 months, depending on their size.

Most patients are eligible for laser treatment for spider veins, but the doctor may suggest alternative options if you have the following conditions.

• Pregnancy: Laser treatment for spider veins is generally not recommended during pregnancy because of the increased risk of complications.

• Cancer, diabetes, and herpes: Patients with these conditions may have weakened immune systems, affecting the healing process after laser treatment. The doctor may recommend alternative options.

• Blood thinners: Blood thinners can increase the risk of bleeding during the procedure. The doctor may need to adjust the dosage or recommend alternative options.

• Tattoos: Tattoos in the treated area can interfere with the laser treatment and make it less effective. The doctor may recommend alternative options or suggest removing the tattoo before the treatment. If you have a severe case of varicose veins, the vein specialist may recommend a sclerotherapy treatment or vein removal instead of laser treatment.

Laser therapy is widely considered a safe and effective treatment for spider and varicose veins, with minimal risks that generally dissipate quickly. However, potential risks of laser therapy include:

• Skin burns or a burning sensation

• Changes in skin color

• Pain

Blood clots

Choosing a qualified and experienced vein doctor to perform the procedure is essential to minimize these risks. At our vein center, all our specialists are highly trained professionals with ample experience in laser therapy.

• Thrombophlebitis is a condition where a vein swells due to a blood clot, but these clots are generally not dangerous and get absorbed by the body.

• Nerve damage can result in numbness in some areas of the skin. Fortunately, this typically improves over a few weeks.

• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in the deep veins. DVT can be dangerous if the clot dislodges and travels to the lungs.

There are various procedures available for the treatment of veins. Depending on the severity of your case and your medical history, one of our vein doctors may suggest one of the following treatment options:

• Radiofrequency Ablation is similar to laser ablation, using radiofrequency energy instead of a laser.

• Sclerotherapy consists of injecting a solution directly into the affected veins.

• Vein Removal involves the doctor removing the vein from the leg during minimally invasive surgery.
